Martha Coakley, who is running for the US Senate in a special election in Massachusetts, left the campaign trail to attend a fund raiser attended by lobbyists for many of the biggest drug and insurance companies in America. The Wall Street Journal reports on some of the big companies that were represented to support the Martha Coakley campaign. "As first reported by Timothy Carney of the Washington Examiner, the host committee for the fundraiser at Pennsylvania Avenue's Sonoma Restaurant includes lobbyists for Pfizer, Merck, Eli Lilly, Novartis and sundry other drug companies that have been among the biggest of ObamaCare's corporate sponsors. Other hosts-who have raised at least $10,000 for Ms. Coakley-include representatives from UnitedHealthcare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Humana and other insurers. As far as we can tell, the insurance industry claims to oppose ObamaCare's current incarnation. "Naturally, lobbyists from America's Health Insurance Plans and Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, the major trade groups, were on hand too." A number of questions come to mind. Why are all of the insurance and drug companies pouring money into Martha Coakley's campaign coffers if they claim to oppose the health care reform measure she supports? The answer is two-fold. First, institutions generally hedge their bets by supporting both Republicans and Democrats. The conventional wisdom is that Martha Coakley will likely still win next Tuesday. Second, a lot of these companies stand to benefit from health care reform because of the mandate that every American buy health insurance. What more would a company want than to have the government force people to buy their product, whether they want or need it or not. Martha Coakley's presence at the fund raiser was a little puzzling. Washington fund raisers occur and raise pretty much the same money whether the candidate shows up or not. Martha Coakley needs to spend every waking moment in Massachusetts campaigner for her seat against an aggressive and enthusiastic Scott Brown campaign. Martha Coakley has also left herself open to charges of hob-nobbing with special interests. To compound the damage Martha Coakley did herself by attending the fund raiser, there was an ugly incident outside the fund raiser. According to Hot Air's Ed Morrissey, a reporter for the Weekly Standard, John McCormack, accosted Martha Coakley to ask a question, which she ignored. John McCormack was subsequently physically blocked and shoved to the sidewalk by a man later identified as Michael Meehan a political operative who has been sent to Massachusetts to handle messaging for the Martha Coakley campaign. It sends a remarkable message indeed when a campaign operative commits assault and battery against an accredited reporter in full view of the candidate, who is a State Attorney General, and she does nothing.
